What is it?
First Place Leadership Summit is a conference created specifically for First Place Leaders to come together with other leaders and the First Place staff to share their leadership highlights and struggles, with the goal of refreshment and refueling for another year of ministry.
Becky Turner, Executive Director, Lifehouse of Houston, will be the keynote speaker for the Leadership Summit. Becky was raised in St. Petersburg, FL, and graduated from Mercer University in Macon, GA, with a degree in Communications. She now calls Houston, TX her home and currently serves as the Executive Director of LifeHouse, a Christ-centered maternity home. Becky has personally experienced success through the First Place program with a weight loss of approximately 35 pounds since January 2005. For now, God has called Becky to walk in the gift of singleness. No matter where we are in our life journey, we all lead busy, frenzied lives with to-do lists longer than most of our days. Whether we’re in the work force, at home with children or celebrating our golden years, we feel pulled in 27 different directions and long for balance and inner peace. Come hear Becky as she helps us find freedom from the frenzy.
Where will it be?
Houston’s First Baptist Church, 7401 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024, Contact Name: Lisa Lewis 800-727-5223, x403 or llewis@firstplace.org.
Who may come?

What's the schedule?
We will begin on Friday at 9:00 AM and end at 8:00 PM that evening. We will begin again on Saturday at 8:30 AM and go until 1:00 PM in the afternoon. Then we will all head down to Carole Lewis’ home on Galveston Bay (weather permitting) until sunset. We will post a more detailed schedule as we get closer to the event. In the event of inclement weather, alternate Saturday afternoon activities are planned.
Tell me about the bay.
Join us as we chat, rest, swim, swing, kayak, boat, ride the Triple Dare, laugh or even take a Siesta at Johnny and Carole’s Home on Galveston Bay. The attire is casual…come comfortable because you will be in and out all day long. Bring your mug, your swimsuit and bring your sweater…you never know what the temperature will be on the water.
Should I plan to be there for all of it?
We understand that sometimes schedules demand that people must arrive late or leave early; however, we would like to strongly suggest that you stay for every minute. Because of the sharing and the prayer times, you will certainly miss something if you are not there for all of it. So, yes!
Will there be a time and place to exercise?
Unfortunately, our Summit schedule does not allow for programmed aerobics. However, we have planned a “Fitness Minute” several times during the conference. We do recommend that you exercise before or after the Summit each day. You may choose to exercise in the hotel’s exercise room or you may use the weight room, walking/running track, racquetball courts, and locker rooms of the Christian Life Center of Houston’s First Baptist Church. The CLC is open and available to you on Thursday 5:45 AM until 10:00 PM and Friday 5:45 AM until 7:00 PM.
How much is the conference?
The cost is $75. Included in the costs are lunch and dinner on Friday and lunch on Saturday. Sign up early so we will be prepared for your arrival. The price goes up after July 11, 2008. Registration is transferable, but not refundable.
What do we wear?
We are so glad you asked! Come dressed casual. You will want to bring a sweater or light jacket to wear, as the church is highly air conditioned.
How should I get to the Houston area?
- Come by plane: We have two airports: George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) or Hobby Airport (HOU).
- Come by car: Houston’s First Baptist Church (HFBC) is located on I-10 West at the southwest corner of the 610 Loop.
How do I get from the airport to HFBC?
You have a few options for travel from the airport:
- Rent a car. This will be your most convenient way to travel. Our suggestion is to get a group together and share the costs.
- Take a taxi…only if you have lots of money.
- You will be responsible for your own transportation to and from the Summit each day.

One last word from Carole…
Dear Ones,
We are excited beyond words about our sixth annual First Place Leadership Summit. All of the new First Place 4 Health resources will be available at this event and we will give extensive training on how to use and teach the new materials. We have worked for over two years writing the new program and can’t wait for you to see it. I promise you are going to love what you see.
Becky Turner, who has been our MC for the last two years, will be our keynote speaker at the Summit this year. Becky has been meeting with me for an hour each week for the last six months, and the things she has taught me on how to plan my work and work my plan have impacted my life in a gigantic way.
As a result, I have asked Becky to teach a six-week course (in two days) covering all I have learned. Becky graciously accepted my invitation to teach our First Place leaders what she has taught me. Trust me; you will be forever grateful you came.
Steve Reynolds, pastor of Capital Baptist Church in Annandale, Virginia, will be with us to give his testimony of how he lost 110 pounds. Steve will also do a seminar on how to make First Place 4 Health a church-wide program. Steve’s church lost 2100 pounds in a four-month period.
We will have delicious, healthy meals, wonderful testimonies, great seminars, and spend Saturday afternoon and evening at our home on Galveston Bay. There is nothing as relaxing or beautiful as being with friends when the sun sets over the water. There will be boating and a ride on the “Triple Dare” if you are brave. We also have lots of chaise lounges if you are inclined to lounge, and an air-conditioned house if you want to stay inside and play games.
We are praying you can come be with us at this year’s Summit. Lasting friendships are made as we share together all that God has done and is doing in our lives.
See you there,
Carole Lewis
First Place 4 Health National Director
Comments from attendees at past Leadership Summits
~ Enjoyed the Q&A. Loved the sharing of testimonies. Felt the Spirit of the Lord when we sang. I came this year not as excited or expecting a lot, but I feel God had me here to learn some important lessons about letting go and letting God, being more patient, loving and selfless.
~ I enjoyed all the sessions and got lots of good ideas about how important leadership is.
~ This weekend was great! Full of knowledge, I start as a member this Sunday in a group at another church. Then start in October teaching at my church.
